Vaginitis Treatment and Management

A successful vaginitis treatment depends on proper diagnosis, since each type of vagintis needs different treatments. Accurate diagnosis is not always an easy task, since the same symptoms can exist in different types of vaginitis. However, you can greatly assist your healthcare practitioner by being able to tell the color, consistency, amount, and smell of any abnormal discharge.

There are different types of vaginitis. The most common are yeast vaginitis, a bacterial infection called bacterial vaginosis and vaginitis related to sexually transmitted diseases such as Trichimonas.

Vaginitis symptoms may include change in color, odor or amount of discharge from your vagina, vaginal itching or irritation, pain during intercourse, painful urination and light vaginal bleeding.

Additionally, you may develop a grayish-white, foul-smelling discharge if you are having a bacterial vaginosis. For yeast infection, the main symptom is itching, but you may have a white, thick discharge that resembles cottage cheese. Trichomoniasis infection can cause a greenish yellow, sometimes frothy discharge.

Vaginitis treatment for uncomplicated yeast infections usually are over-the-counter antifungal creams. In some situations, women may be given a prescription pill called Diflucan to treat a yeast infection. For bacterial vaginosis, either oral or vaginal forms of the medications can be used. A single dose of Flagyl is used for trichimonas. Other types of vaginal infections are treated based on specific findings on exam or on culture results.

For the natural vaginitis treatment, one of the most important factor is the maintenance of hygienic conditions. Another important factor is diet. The patient needs to fast for a minimum of three days depending upon the condition. The fasting period may be extended when necessary. During this period, she may take juices of lemon and other sub-acidic fruits. This will give the body defense system a full direction to address the inflammation and infection.

Other natural vaginitis treatment include the decoction of the herb chebulic myrobalan and neem leaves for vaginal irritation and inflammation, the application of a cold douche on the perineal region for 10 to 16 minutes – twice a day, and a moderately prolonged cold hip bath accompanied with a hot foot bath.

Another mode of vaginitis treatment that is considered beneficial is the wet girdle pack for about an hour. For this treatment, a thin cotton underwear and another thick or woolen underwear are required. The thin underwear should be wrung in cold water and worn by the patient. The thick dry underwear should be worn above the wet underwear. If the patient feels chill, she should be covered with a blanket. This treatment helps reduce inflammation.
